Dublin Hippocampus Pin
The Hippocampus is 50% fish, 50% horse and 100% beautiful. This pin is based on the cast iron designs that adorn Grattan Bridge. They were most likely made by Kennan and Sons of Fishamble St on a design drawn up by Bindon B Stoney.
History of the design
They originally appeared sometime after 1870 at the Henry Grattan Monument at College Green. Grattan Bridge, also named after Henry Grattan, got it's own ones later, though they were slightly differently coloured. You can see them on Google Maps here. If you read about the history of Essex / Grattan Bridge (page 5 of the pdf. - and seriously, it's not as dull as you'd think), you can see a photo showing them on Grattan Bridge from 1875. So they're at least 150 years old.
Anyway, this design is amazing and will surely strike a chord with anyone who's a history buff, a lover of Dublin Architecture of those who have fond memories falling out of the Workmans, DiFontaines or Panti Bar.
